Changing the gearbox oil is important to prevent malfunctions and deterioration of gearbox components. If the oil is not changed, it simply becomes dirtier and dirtier. Dirty oil does not lubricate properly, increases friction and operating temperatures, and causes the engine to wear more quickly. In the medium term, neglecting this maintenance leads to very costly repairs.
In vehicles, the gearbox is the element responsible for obtaining sufficient torque at the wheels to move the vehicle from a standstill, and once in motion, obtaining sufficient torque at the wheels to overcome resistance to forward movement, mainly those derived from the aerodynamic profile, friction with the rolling and uphill slopes.
How to know if it’s time?
There are 4 easy “clues” to detect when to change the oil:
- The oil has a very strong smell.
- The engine is noisier than usual.
- The check engine light does not turn off.
- The oil level has dropped.
When should you change the gearbox oil?
Depending on the make, model, and year of manufacture of the car, as well as the way it is driven, an oil change is recommended every 15,000 to 20,000 km.
If you don’t use your car often, we still recommend an annual oil change.
For older vehicles or those with more than 150,000 km, a little more maintenance will be required: in this case, we recommend an oil change approximately every 10,000 km.
